Almost everyone buys pads the same way: one box, when the last one runs out, usually on the day it is needed. In Dubai that means a hot drive to the supermarket or a delivery fee on a single box, month after month. How many months does a bulk order cover

It depends on your flow, but the arithmetic in our guide to how many pads per period gives a typical cycle as 14 to 18 day pads, 4 to 6 night pads and a few liners. On that basis:

Do sanitary pads expire?

Sanitary pads are not sterile medical devices and have no "use by" date in the food sense. Most manufacturers print a production date and recommend use within three years, some within five. What actually changes over time:

  • The adhesive weakens. The strips holding the pad and wings to underwear lose tack, so an old pad shifts more. This is the first thing to fail, and heat speeds it up.
  • The wrapper seal can fail. Once the individual wrapper is open, the pad is exposed to humidity, dust and whatever else is in the cupboard.
  • The absorbent core degrades slowly. Superabsorbent polymers and plant-fibre cores hold less after years in humidity. Not dangerous, but a five-year-old pad will leak sooner than a fresh one.
  • Plant-based materials age faster than plastic. Organic pads with bamboo, corn fibre and plant-based films are designed to break down, so they are more sensitive to heat and humidity in storage than a fully plastic pad. Two years is a sensible working limit in the UAE for organic pads kept well; fresher is better.

An old pad that is still sealed, dry and sticks properly is fine to use. One that is discoloured, smells musty, has a failed wrapper or no longer sticks should be binned. The NHS guidance on periods does not set a shelf life; the practical rule is a clean, sealed, dry pad is a usable pad.

How to store pads in Dubai heat

Dubai storage is the real constraint on bulk buying. A sealed bathroom in a Gulf summer runs warm and steamy; a balcony cupboard can hit 50°C; a car boot in July is an oven. The rules:

  1. Keep pads in their individual wrappers and in the outer box until needed. The box blocks light and dust; the wrapper blocks humidity.
  2. Not in the bathroom. Steam from daily showers is the single biggest enemy of stored pads. A bedroom wardrobe shelf or a hallway cupboard is better.
  3. Away from the sun and external walls. A cupboard against a west-facing wall in August is warmer than you think.
  4. Off the floor in ground-floor villas, where humidity and the occasional insect are issues.
  5. Never in the car. A pad left in a Dubai car for a week in summer will have a softened adhesive and a warped shape. Keep two or three individually wrapped pads in a pouch in your handbag, and restock from home.
  6. Oldest first. Write the month on the box when it arrives and use the earlier box first, exactly as you would with anything else you buy in bulk.

With those rules a six-month stock keeps perfectly, and a three-month stock needs no thought at all.

How to split a bulk order

The mistake in bulk buying is ordering sixty of the same pad. Periods change through the week and through the year, and a well-planned order covers all of it:
