How to Delay Your Period in the UAE: Tablets, Rules and Safer Options (2026)
Every year, in the weeks before Eid, the summer holidays and the wedding season, "period delay tablets Dubai" becomes one of the most searched period questions in the UAE. The reasons are practical: a beach holiday booked months ago, Umrah, a wedding where you are the bride or standing next to her, or simply a work trip where a heavy day would be miserable.

The short answer
You can delay a period in the UAE with a prescription progestogen tablet, usually norethisterone (sold as Primolut N or Primolut Nor), taken three times a day starting about three days before your period is due. Your period normally arrives two to three days after you stop. It is prescription-only here, so plan a clinic or telehealth appointment at least a week before you need it. If you already take the combined contraceptive pill, you can skip the break and run two packs together without any extra medication.
How period delay tablets work
Your period starts when progesterone drops at the end of the cycle and the uterine lining sheds. Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen. Taking it keeps progesterone-like levels artificially high, so the lining does not shed while you are on the tablets. When you stop, levels fall and bleeding follows within a few days.
The standard regimen, as described in the Bayer patient leaflet for Primolut Nor, is one 5 mg tablet three times a day, starting three days before the expected period, for a maximum of about two weeks. Longer courses are not recommended without medical supervision.

Norethisterone is not a contraceptive at this dose. If you rely on it and are sexually active, you still need contraception.
The UAE rules: prescription-only, and check before you travel
Norethisterone is a prescription medicine in the UAE. Licensed pharmacies such as BinSina, Life and Aster will dispense Primolut Nor only against a valid prescription from a UAE-licensed doctor. Websites that offer to sell it without one are operating outside the rules, and you have no idea what is in the box.
Two more points matter for people who travel:
Bringing it into the UAE. Several norethisterone-containing products appear on the Ministry of Health and Prevention controlled and semi-controlled list. If you are flying in with tablets prescribed abroad, carry the original box and the prescription, keep it to a personal-use quantity, and check the MOHAP personal medicine import guidance before you fly. Taking it out of the UAE. Saudi Arabia, where most Umrah travellers are heading, also treats hormone medicines as prescription items. Carry the prescription with the box.
Getting a prescription in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
You have three realistic routes.
- Your gynaecologist or GP. A standard consultation. Most insurers cover the visit; the tablets themselves may or may not be covered as an elective medicine.
- Telehealth. DHA-licensed video consultations through hospital apps and platforms are the fastest option and typically issue an e-prescription you can fill at a linked pharmacy the same day.
- A pharmacy with an in-house clinic. Some larger pharmacy branches have a licensed doctor on site during the day.
Whichever route you take, the doctor will ask about migraines with aura, blood clots, liver problems, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and any history of breast cancer. These are the main reasons norethisterone is not prescribed.

Timing it for the common UAE reasons
Eid and the summer break. Count back from the first day you want to be period-free. Start tablets three days before your expected period, and expect bleeding two to three days after you stop, so a two-week holiday can mean 15 to 17 days on tablets. That is the upper limit of what is normally recommended, so discuss it with your doctor rather than stretching further.
Umrah and Hajj. This is the single most common reason women in the Gulf ask about period delay. Menstruating women cannot perform tawaf, so many choose to delay. The timing rule is the same. Start early enough, carry your prescription, and take a small supply of pads anyway because breakthrough spotting is common.
A wedding. If you are the bride, you have the advantage of knowing the date months out. Some doctors will suggest a different approach for a date that far away, such as adjusting a contraceptive pill cycle, which is gentler than a two-week norethisterone course.
Exams and work trips. Short delays of three to five days are the easiest to manage and have the fewest side effects.
Side effects, and who should not take it
Common side effects include bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, mood changes, nausea and breakthrough spotting. Most are mild and stop when you stop the tablets. The heavier your period normally is, the more likely you are to see spotting.
Norethisterone is generally not suitable if you are pregnant or could be, are breastfeeding, have a history of blood clots or certain liver conditions, or have had breast cancer. Smokers over 35 and women with migraine with aura are also assessed carefully. This is why it is a prescription medicine and why buying it informally is a poor idea.
Alternatives that do not involve extra hormones
If you are on the combined pill. Run two packs back to back without the seven-day break. This is the method most doctors prefer because it adds nothing new to your system. It does not work with the progestogen-only mini pill.
If you use a hormonal IUD, implant or injection. Many users already have light or absent periods; ask your doctor whether a delay is even needed.
