Why Period Care Belongs in Your School's Sustainability Programme

Most UAE schools now run a sustainability programme of some kind: an eco-committee, a green flag application, a plastic-reduction pledge, a Year of Sustainability display. Almost none of them include the one plastic product half the school uses every month. This article makes the case for adding period care to that programme, explains what changes when a school switches to biodegradable pads, and shows how to turn it into a student-led project rather than another item on the facilities list.

The Plastic Nobody Counts

A conventional disposable pad is around 90 percent plastic by weight: a polyethylene top sheet, a polypropylene core wrap, a plastic back sheet, plastic wings, adhesive and an individual plastic wrapper. Used for a few hours, it then sits in landfill for centuries. Across a woman's life that is roughly ten thousand pads. Talking About It Honestly

Two cautions, because sustainability claims about period products are easy to overstate.

First, "biodegradable" is a spectrum. Plant-based pads break down far faster than plastic ones, but only fully in the right conditions. A school should say "plastic-free and biodegradable, replacing a product that was 90 percent plastic", not "compostable" unless the school actually composts them, which almost none do.

Second, the most sustainable pad is still the one that gets used, so comfort and skin safety come first. A pad students dislike goes in the bin unused.
