What Are Organic Pads? Every Layer of a Sanitary Pad Explained

"Organic pads" is one of the most searched phrases in period care in the UAE, and one of the least well defined. Food has a legal definition of organic. Pads do not. So the word ends up on boxes that mean very different things, from a fully plant-fibre pad to a plastic pad with a green leaf printed on the wrapper.

This guide takes a pad apart layer by layer, explains what a conventional pad is actually made of, shows what an organic or natural pad replaces at each layer, and gives you a short list of what to check on a label so the word means something when you buy.

The Five Layers of a Sanitary Pad

Every disposable pad, conventional or organic, has the same basic structure.

1. Top sheet. The layer that touches your skin. It has to let fluid through quickly and stay dry-feeling.

2. Acquisition layer. A thin layer under the top sheet that spreads fluid so it does not pool in one spot.

3. Absorbent core. The bulk of the pad. Holds the fluid.

4. Back sheet. The leak-proof layer on the underside, with the adhesive strip.

5. Wrapper and release paper. The individual packaging and the strip you peel off the adhesive.

Where a pad sits on the conventional-to-organic spectrum is decided entirely by what each of these five layers is made from.

What a Conventional Pad Is Made Of

Most pads on a Dubai supermarket shelf look like this.

Added to that, many conventional pads include fragrance to mask odour, and some use dyes for patterns or coloured wings. None of this has to be listed on the box.

Roughly 90% of a conventional pad by weight is plastic. That is why it sits in landfill for hundreds of years, and it is also why it traps heat and moisture against skin, which matters a great deal in a UAE summer.

What an Organic Pad Replaces

A genuinely organic or natural pad swaps the plastic and processed elements for plant-based ones at each layer.

Organic, Natural, Chemical-Free: Do the Words Mean Different Things?

In practice, yes, and it helps to know the difference.

Organic should refer to the fibre. Organic cotton or organic bamboo means the plant was grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilisers, ideally certified by a body like GOTS or EcoCert. A pad with an organic cotton top sheet and a plastic back sheet can still truthfully say "organic cotton" on the box.

Natural is the loosest term. It usually means plant fibre somewhere in the pad, but there is no standard.

Chemical-free is technically meaningless, since everything is made of chemicals, but in period care it is shorthand for no chlorine bleaching, no fragrance, no dyes. Look for those three specific exclusions rather than the phrase.

Why the Top Sheet Matters Most

If you only care about one layer, care about the one touching your skin.

The skin around the vulva is thinner and more absorbent than skin elsewhere on the body. A woven plastic top sheet holds warmth and moisture against it for hours at a time. Add fragrance, and you have the two most common triggers for contact irritation sitting together in the worst possible place. This is the mechanism behind most pad rash, and it is why switching the top sheet alone often solves a problem that has lasted years.

How to Read a Pad Label in the UAE

Five questions, in order.

What is the top sheet made of? If the box does not say, assume plastic.
What is the back sheet made of? Corn-starch or PLA is the plant option. If unstated, assume polyethylene.
Is it chlorine-free? Should be stated explicitly.

A brand that has done the work answers all five on the box or the product page. A brand that has not changes the subject to softness and freshness.

Do Organic Pads Work as Well?

This is the fair question, and the answer is yes, with one honest caveat. A plant-fibre pad with a corn-starch back sheet is as leak-proof as a plastic one. Absorbency depends on the core, and a well-made bamboo core holds as much as a conventional one of the same size. The caveat is thickness: some organic pads are thicker than the thinnest conventional ultrathins, because they use less superabsorbent polymer. Most people do not notice.
