Why Does My Pad Smell? Period Odour Causes, How to Stop It in UAE Heat, and the Smells That Mean You Should See a Doctor (2026)

Every woman notices it at some point, usually on a hot afternoon after a long stretch in the same pad: a metallic, slightly sour smell that was not there this morning. In Dubai it is more noticeable, arrives faster, and the shelves are full of scented pads promising to fix it. They do not. They cover it, briefly, and often make the underlying problem worse.

This guide explains what period odour actually is, why it is stronger in the Gulf climate, the routine and pad type that genuinely control it, and the specific smells that are not normal period odour at all and need a doctor.

General information, not medical advice. The section on abnormal smells describes symptoms that should be assessed by a doctor.

The short answer

Menstrual blood has very little smell when it leaves the body. Odour develops when blood sits on a pad, meets the air and the bacteria that normally live on skin, and warms up. So the smell is a function of time, heat and the pad's surface, not of poor hygiene. The fix is changing more often, particularly after time outdoors, using a breathable unscented pad, and washing the outside of the body with water. A strong fishy smell, a foul smell, or a smell with unusual discharge, itching or pain is not period odour; it usually indicates bacterial vaginosis or another infection and needs a doctor.

What period odour is

Blood itself carries a faint metallic scent from its iron content. The smell most women recognise as "period smell" is what happens next: blood and the tissue shed with it sit on the pad's surface, the skin's normal bacteria feed on them, and the by-products of that process are what you smell. The vagina also produces its own fluid during a period and sweat glands in the groin add to the mix. None of this is dirt. The NHS periods guidance treats changing pads regularly through the day as ordinary hygiene, and the smell is simply a sign the pad has been on long enough for bacteria to get going.

The NHS vaginal discharge page makes the point that some smell is normal, that the vagina cleans itself, and that scented products, douching and harsh soaps disturb its balance and cause the very problems people use them to prevent. That is the single most useful fact in this guide.

Why it is worse in the UAE

Three things about the Gulf climate speed the process up.

Heat. Bacteria multiply faster at higher temperatures. A pad worn through a 42°C school run and a walk across a car park is warmer for longer than one worn in a European autumn, so the smell arrives in two or three hours rather than five or six.

Sweat. The groin sweats heavily in summer. Sweat adds moisture and its own bacteria to the pad and keeps the skin damp.

Plastic pads. A conventional pad has a woven polyethylene top sheet and a plastic back sheet. Both trap heat and moisture against the skin. The pad becomes a warm, wet, sealed environment, which is exactly what odour-producing bacteria need. It is also the environment that causes the chafing covered in our pad rash guide, which is why women in the UAE often get rash and odour together.

Our guide to periods in the Dubai summer covers the whole seasonal routine; the odour-specific fixes are below.

Why scented pads make it worse

Scented pads are common on UAE shelves and are marketed directly at this problem. They work by adding a fragrance mixture to the pad's surface, and that has three consequences.

First, fragrance covers smell for an hour or two and then mixes with it; a perfumed, warm, used pad smells worse than an unperfumed one. Second, fragrance is one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis according to the NHS, and the skin it sits against is thin, warm and under friction for hours; irritated skin is more prone to the itching and soreness that the NHS vaginitis page describes. Third, disturbing the area with fragranced products is on the NHS list of things that upset the vaginal bacterial balance, which is a route to the abnormal smells covered later.

Our comparison of scented and unscented pads sets out the evidence. Every LiZZOM pad and liner is unscented for exactly these reasons. The same logic applies to "herbal" and "antibacterial" pads sold in the UAE; our guide to antibacterial and herbal pad claims looks at what those labels actually mean.

What actually controls odour

1. Change on a clock, not by feel

This is the whole answer for most women. Odour is a function of how long blood has been on the pad, so a fresh pad every three to four hours by day removes the source before bacteria have time to work. In summer, change after any significant time outdoors regardless of how the pad looks. Our guide to how often to change a pad in UAE heat gives the timings, and our guide to how many pads a period takes budgets for the extra changes.

2. Use a breathable pad

A pad whose top and back sheets let moisture out stays drier and cooler, so bacteria multiply more slowly and the skin is less irritated. LiZZOM pads use a bamboo and corn fibre top layer and a plant-based breathable back sheet with no polyethylene. Bamboo fibre is also naturally resistant to bacterial growth, which is one of the reasons it is used for the top layer, though the honest position is that changing regularly does far more than any fibre property. Our guides to breathable pads and bamboo pads in the UAE explain the construction.

3. Wash with water, outside only

The NHS advice is to wash the vulva, the outside, with water or a plain unperfumed wash once a day, and never to wash inside the vagina or use douches, wipes or perfumed products. During a period a quick rinse at each change if you are at home, and a plain water wipe if you are out, is all that is needed. More washing does not mean less smell; it means more irritation.

4. Cotton underwear, changed daily

Synthetic and tight underwear hold heat and moisture. Breathable cotton briefs, changed every day and more often if sweaty, make a real difference in summer. Loose, light clothing when possible helps too.

5. Dispose promptly and wrap

A used pad in an open bathroom bin in a warm flat is a source of smell in itself. Wrap each pad in the wrapper of the new one, use a lidded bin, and empty it daily during your period. Our guide to how to dispose of sanitary pads in the UAE covers home, office and biodegradable pads.

6. Do not go smaller to feel fresher

Some women switch to a thinner pad or a liner hoping it will be cooler. A liner on a flow day simply saturates faster and smells sooner. Match the product to the flow, using our small pads and liners guide and pad sizes guide, and manage odour with changes.

The smells that are not normal

Normal period odour is faint, metallic or slightly sour, and disappears with a fresh pad. The following are different and need a doctor rather than a different pad.

A strong fishy smell, often worse after sex or around your period, with thin grey or white discharge. The NHS bacterial vaginosis page describes this as the classic sign of bacterial vaginosis, an imbalance of the normal vaginal bacteria that is very common, not sexually transmitted, and treated with a short course of antibiotics. Scented products and douching are among the things that make it more likely.

A foul or rotten smell that does not go with a fresh pad. Occasionally caused by a forgotten tampon, which needs prompt removal, and otherwise a reason to be examined.

Smell with itching, soreness, a thick white discharge, or pain when urinating. The NHS thrush page and the vaginitis page above cover the common causes, including thrush, which is more common in hot humid conditions and after antibiotics. Thrush itself typically has little smell but often gets confused with other causes.

Any new smell with green or yellow discharge, bleeding between periods, or pelvic pain. Book a doctor.

In Dubai and Abu Dhabi you can see a gynaecologist or a GP directly, usually within a day or two, and most insurance covers the visit. Pharmacies here sell over-the-counter thrush treatment, but if you have not had the symptom before, or it keeps coming back, get it diagnosed rather than guessing; bacterial vaginosis and thrush need different treatments and the wrong one delays the right one.

A UAE summer odour routine

For a typical heavy day between May and September:

  • Morning: fresh ultrathin pad, Large if you sit for long periods; rinse with water; cotton briefs.
  • After the commute or school run: change if you have been outdoors more than twenty minutes.
  • Midday: change, plain water wipe.
  • Late afternoon: change, particularly before the gym or any evening plans. Our guide to exercising on your period in Dubai covers the post-workout change.
  • Night: thick night pad in Large or XL, shower, fresh cotton briefs.
  • Wrapped pads in a lidded bin, emptied daily.

That is five or six pads on a heavy summer day, one or two more than in winter, which our how many pads per period guide costs out at a few extra dirhams a month.

The bottom line

Period smell is time plus heat plus bacteria on the pad's surface. Change every three to four hours and after time outdoors, use a breathable unscented pad, wash the outside with water, wear cotton, and bin promptly. Skip scented pads, wipes and douches entirely. If the smell is fishy, foul or comes with discharge, itching or pain, it is not a pad problem and a doctor can fix it quickly.

LiZZOM's ultrathin pads, thick night pads and daily liners are unscented, made from bamboo and corn fibre with no polyethylene and no chlorine bleaching, individually wrapped, and delivered across Dubai in two to three working days and to the other emirates in four to ten, free above AED 50.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my pad smell?

Menstrual blood has little smell when it leaves the body. Odour develops when blood sits on the pad, meets air and the bacteria that normally live on skin, and warms up. It is a function of time, heat and the pad surface, not of poor hygiene.

Why is period smell worse in Dubai?

Heat speeds up bacterial growth, the groin sweats heavily in summer, and plastic-topped pads trap both heat and moisture against the skin. The smell that takes five or six hours to develop in Europe can arrive in two or three here.

Do scented pads stop period smell?

No. Fragrance covers the smell for an hour or two and then mixes with it, is one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis, and disturbs the vaginal bacterial balance. Change more often and use an unscented breathable pad instead.

How do I stop period smell?

Change every three to four hours by day and after any time outdoors in summer, use a breathable unscented pad, wash the outside of the body with water only, wear cotton underwear, and wrap used pads in a lidded bin emptied daily. Never douche or use wipes inside.

What period smell means I should see a doctor?

A strong fishy smell, especially with thin grey or white discharge, usually indicates bacterial vaginosis. A foul smell that does not go with a fresh pad, or any smell with itching, soreness, thick discharge, pain when urinating or bleeding between periods, needs a doctor rather than a different pad.
