Two things stand out. Napkins in Dubai cost roughly two to three times what the same brand costs in India, Pakistan or Sri Lanka, so budgeting AED 25 to 45 a month is realistic. Why napkins that worked at home cause problems here

This is the complaint we hear most from women in their first year in Dubai: the same Whisper or Stayfree that was fine in Mumbai, Kochi or Lahore now causes itching, redness at the edges, and a smell by mid-afternoon.

The napkin has not changed. The climate has. Dubai runs at 40°C or more from May to September with humidity that swings between 40% and 90%, and you move constantly between that heat and hard air conditioning. A conventional napkin has a polyethylene top sheet and a plastic back sheet, so it holds a layer of warm moisture against the skin all day. Sweat from the groin adds to it. Bacteria multiply faster in that environment, which produces odour, and the wet plastic surface rubbing against skin produces chafing and rash.

The honest position is that Whisper and Stayfree absorb perfectly well. If you have never had rash or odour trouble in Dubai and you like the price, there is no reason to change. One word of caution on labels. "Anion", "herbal", "antibacterial strip" and "negative ion" napkins are heavily marketed to South Asian buyers in the UAE. Sizes: Indian XL is not Dubai XL

Indian brands size generously; Whisper XL in India is around 280 to 290 mm and XXL over 300 mm. UAE and European sizing is a step shorter, so an "XL" from a Gulf brand may be the length you knew as L. If you are buying a new brand, check the millimetres, not the letter. Supermarkets. Carrefour, Lulu, Union Coop, Spinneys, Waitrose and Choithrams all have a full aisle. Lulu and Union Coop branches in Karama, Deira, Al Nahda and International City carry the widest South Asian range, including Stayfree and Indian Whisper lines.

Pharmacies. Aster, Life, BinSina and Boots stock Always, Kotex and Libresse and are open late; a pharmacy is the answer at 11 pm.
