Sanitary Towels in Dubai: A Guide for British Expats on Where to Buy, What Changes From the UK, and the Organic Option Delivered to Your Door (2026)

Ask for sanitary towels in a Dubai pharmacy and you will get a polite pause, then a nod towards the shelf labelled sanitary napkins or pads. The product is the same. Most of the rest is not: the brands are partly different, the sizes are labelled differently, the prices are higher, and the climate changes what works. This guide is for women arriving from the UK, or already here and still buying on autopilot, and it covers where to buy, what to expect, and why a growing number of British expats have switched to an organic pad made for the Gulf.

The short answer

You can buy sanitary towels in every Dubai supermarket and pharmacy, including the UK-familiar Spinneys, Waitrose and Boots as well as Carrefour and the big pharmacy chains, and online from those retailers, from Amazon.ae and from UAE brands direct. Expect to pay more than in the UK, partly because period products carry 5 percent VAT here rather than the UK zero rate, and partly because most branded pads are imported. Sizes are labelled Regular, Large and XL rather than Normal, Super and Night. In the UAE heat a breathable, plastic-free pad matters more than it did at home, which is why organic bamboo pads made and delivered in the UAE, such as LiZZOM, have become the default for many expat households.

What they are called here

In the UAE, in shop signage and on websites, the product is most often "sanitary pads" or "sanitary napkins", with "pads" the everyday word. "Sanitary towels" is understood in the British-run retailers but will draw a blank in a corner shop or from a delivery driver. If you are asking a pharmacist, say pads. Sizing is the bigger practical difference. UK packs are usually labelled by absorbency (Normal, Super, Super Plus, Night). UAE packs, including LiZZOM's, are labelled by length: Regular, Large and XL. A rough translation:

Where to buy sanitary towels in Dubai

Supermarkets. Spinneys and Waitrose stock a feminine care aisle with a mix of the international brands you know and regional ones you do not; Carrefour, Lulu and Union Coop carry the widest range of mass-market pads at the lowest shelf prices. All of them deliver, with free grocery delivery typically kicking in above a minimum spend of a few hundred dirhams.

Pharmacies. Boots has UAE branches and an online shop; Life, Aster and BinSina pharmacies are on almost every block and open late. Pharmacies are the answer for an emergency pack at 11 PM, but the range is small and the price per pad is the highest in the city.

Online marketplaces. Amazon.ae and Noon carry imported pads, including organic ones, with next-day delivery in Dubai on many lines. Stock is inconsistent for niche brands and pack prices swing.

UAE brands direct. This is the option that did not exist when most expats last thought about it. Why prices are higher than in the UK

Two reasons, and neither is the retailer being greedy.

VAT. The UK abolished VAT on period products in January 2021, per the UK government announcement. The UAE charges 5 percent VAT on most goods under the Federal Tax Authority rules, with no exemption for sanitary products.

Import. Almost every branded pad on a UAE supermarket shelf is imported, so shipping and distributor margins sit on top of the factory price. Locally made and locally warehoused brands avoid some of that, which is why a UAE organic pad can cost about the same as an imported conventional one.

In practice a 10-pack of branded pads in Dubai runs from around AED 10 for basic plastic pads to AED 25 or more for imported organic ones. What the Dubai climate changes

This is the part most expats learn the hard way in their first August.

A conventional pad has a woven plastic top sheet and a polyethylene back sheet. In a British spring that is fine. In a Dubai summer of 42°C and 70 percent humidity, the plastic traps sweat as well as flow against the skin for hours, the adhesive softens and the pad shifts, and the result is the chafing, itching and heat rash that women often assume is a new sensitivity. It is not sensitivity. It is the pad.

Three things help:

The organic option, and why expats switch

British expats are often already familiar with organic cotton pads from UK supermarkets and chemists. The UAE version of that category is smaller on the shelf but easier to buy direct, and the organic argument is stronger here because of the heat.

Setting up a household supply

Most expat households settle into one of two patterns.

Order quarterly, direct. A common order for a medium flow is 30 ultrathin Regular, 20 thick Large and 60 liners, about AED 149 every three months with free delivery, kept in the bathroom cupboard with a few wrapped spares in every handbag and the car.

Top up from the supermarket. Works, but tends to mean whichever imported brand is in stock that week and an emergency pharmacy pack at the start of every period.

Disposal, bins and the things nobody tells you

UAE plumbing and villa septic systems do not cope with anything flushed other than paper, and pads should never go down the toilet anyway. Every women's washroom in a mall, office or gym here has a lidded sanitary bin in the cubicle; at home, wrap in the pad's own wrapper and bin it. The bottom line

Say pads, not towels. Buy Large where you bought Super. Expect to pay a little more because of VAT and import costs, and expect a plastic pad to behave worse in the heat than it did at home.
