Teen Vaginal Discharge: What Is Normal and What to Check

Yes, vaginal discharge is normal for a teenager, and it usually starts six to twelve months before the first period. Discharge is one of the earliest signs that puberty is under way and the body is preparing for its first cycle. Why discharge starts before the first period

As oestrogen rises in puberty, the walls of the vagina begin producing fluid. This fluid carries away old cells, keeps the tissue moist and maintains a slightly acidic environment that protects against infection. Think of it as the body's own cleaning system switching on.

Most girls notice it somewhere between ages 10 and 14, typically after breast buds appear and before the first period. The amount varies a lot from person to person. Some have a small daily amount, others notice it only some days. Both are normal. How discharge changes across the cycle

Once periods start, discharge follows a monthly pattern driven by hormones. Knowing it helps a teen recognise what is her normal.

• A mild, slightly musky or sour smell. The vagina is not meant to smell of nothing, and it is definitely not meant to smell of flowers.
• A small amount every day, or more around mid-cycle.

Colours, textures and symptoms worth checking

Most changes are not serious, but these are the ones a doctor should see.

Thick, white, lumpy discharge with itching or soreness. This is the classic picture of a yeast infection (thrush). It is common in teens, especially after antibiotics, in hot humid weather, or after weeks in tight synthetic clothes. It is easily treated with an over-the-counter cream or pessary from a pharmacy, but a first episode should be confirmed by a doctor rather than guessed.

Grey or thin white discharge with a fishy smell. This suggests bacterial vaginosis, an imbalance in the normal vaginal bacteria. It is not dangerous but needs a short course of antibiotics from a doctor. It is not caused by poor hygiene, and washing more will make it worse.

Green, yellow or frothy discharge, especially with pain when urinating or pelvic pain. These can indicate a sexually transmitted infection if the teen is sexually active, or occasionally a forgotten tampon or another cause. This needs a doctor without delay.

Blood-stained discharge outside a period, or discharge that started suddenly with pain, fever or a strong smell. See a doctor.

Discharge is a natural conversation opener. A daughter who understands what normal looks like is far more likely to tell you when something is not normal.
