The Dramatic Period
Your period is like an upsized McDonald's meal. It comes with more fries and a larger Coca-Cola - all the extras - than you can need. I’ve often heard people say “OMG, my period is so dramatic! Why can’t it just come and go quietly without making a fuss!?” The PMS, the bleeding and staining. And then, there are the cramps. Ooof ouch, the cramps.
Why Women get Period Cramps
During your period, your uterus contracts to help expel its lining. The uterus is a muscle, and when it contracts too strongly, it can press against nearby blood vessels, cutting off oxygen to the uterus, causing period cramps and pain.
Conditions like the following may also contribute to period cramps:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Ovarian cysts
Natural Relief for Period Cramps
If any of the above conditions affect you, do be sure to visit a medical professional and if you feel like anything is amiss, do not hesitate to ask your doctor! In the meantime, here are some natural, at-home remedies to provide natural relief for your period cramps.
Herbal teas consist of natural anti-inflammatory products as well as anti-spasmodics. This helps by relaxing the muscles in your uterus that are to blame for your period cramps.
My favorite and a magical way to reduce your pain is through heat. Hot water bags and showers are phenomenal in taking away the pain that has been bothering you. It immediately and effectively works to relax your muscles around the abdomen and the uterus.
Although caffeine is loved by all, it isn’t a very good intake during periods. It causes constriction around your uterus causing worser cramps than ever! To all coffee lovers who cannot live without your daily dose of coffee, try going ahead with decaf.
Many are unaware about how helpful supplements can be. Vitamin D and E reduce your cramps and inflammation respectively. Whereas magnesium could do both, reduce period cramps as well as your bloating.
Cut Out Junk Food
The word “snacks” itself gets our mouthwatering, even without specifications! But sadly, snacks rich in fat and sugar causes a little bloating in our body, leading to a slight elevation of muscles. This adversely affects our period and causes painful cramps in muscles surrounding our abdomen. Thus, it is advised to avoid eating those foods to get rid of the pain.
